Georgia Tech’s King Crowned National Quarterback of the Week
FORT WORTH, Texas (Oct. 31, 2023) – Georgia Tech sophomore Haynes King has been selected as the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week for his performance in the Yellow Jackets’ 46-42 upset win over No. 17 North Carolina in week nine.
Against the Tar Heels, King accounted for 377 total yards (287 passing, 90 rushing) and tossed four touchdown passes, including the go-ahead score with 4:28 remaining. In all, he was 23-for-30 (.767) through the air and averaged 11.3 yards per carry on eight rushes.
King’s single-game completion percentage was the second-highest for a player with at least 30 pass attempts in school history. He also became just the second Georgia Tech quarterback to throw at least four touchdown passes in a game three times in a season, joining 1999 Davey O’Brien Award winner Joe Hamilton.
Georgia Tech, which trailed by 10 points in the fourth quarter, amassed 635 yards of total offense, its most ever in an Atlantic Coast Conference game. King is the second straight ACC player to take home the weekly honor, following Florida State’s Jordan Travis.
The Davey O’Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981. Over its time, the Davey O’Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.3 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.
