LSU’s Daniels, Oklahoma’s Gabriel Share National QB of the Week Honors
FORT WORTH, Texas (Nov. 14, 2023) – For the first time this year, the Davey O’Brien Foundation is honoring a pair of quarterbacks as LSU’s Jayden Daniels and Oklahoma’s Dillon Gabriel have been awarded Co-National Quarterback of the Week accolades for week 11.
Daniels became the first player in NCAA history to pass for more than 350 yards and rush for more than 200 in a game, and set an SEC record with 606 total yards in the Tigers’ 52-35 win over Florida. He completed 17 of 26 passes for 372 yards (21.9 per completion) and rushed 12 times for 234 yards (19.5 per carry). Daniels accumulated five touchdowns (three passing, two rushing) and had a quarterback rating of 98.9.
In a 59-20 victory over West Virginia, Gabriel became the first player in Sooner history and the first FBS player this season to account for eight touchdowns in a game. Gabriel was 23-for-36 passing for 423 yards (18.4 per completion) and five touchdowns against no interceptions. He also rushed 11 times for 50 yards and three scores. He amassed four touchdowns in each half and finished with a 96.9 total quarterback rating.
The Davey O’Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981. Over its time, the Davey O’Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.3 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.
In 1938, O’Brien, who was a star quarterback for TCU, became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955. For more information, visit www.DaveyOBrienAward.com.
