Oklahoma’s Gabriel Lauded as National Quarterback of the Week

FORT WORTH, Texas (Oct. 10, 2023) — Oklahoma senior Dillon Gabriel has been selected as the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week for the sixth week of the 2023 college football season.

On Saturday, Gabriel directed Oklahoma to a 34-30 come-from-behind win over No. 3 Texas in the Red River Rivalry in Dallas. He threw the game-winning 3-yard touchdown strike with 15 seconds left after driving the team 75 yards down the field with no timeouts and just 1:17 left to play. The win was the Sooners’ first victory over an AP top-5 team since 2017.

On the afternoon, he rushed 14 times for a career-best 113 yards (8.1 yards per carry) and a touchdown. Through the air, Gabriel was 23-for-38 for 285 yards and a score. He became the first Sooner ever to throw for at least 250 yards and rush for at least 100 yards in a game against the Longhorns. He did not commit a turnover and helped the Sooners gain 486 yards and score 34 points against a Texas team that entered the day giving up 290.8 yards and 12.8 points per game.

A native of Mililani, Hawaii, Gabriel was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts. Through six weeks, he ranks among the NCAA leaders in passing touchdowns (3rd, 16), points responsible for (3rd, 126), total quarterback rating (3rd, 91.0), total offense (4th, 347.7), passing yards (5th, 1,878) and passing efficiency (8th, 178.2).

The Davey O’Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981. Over its time, the Davey O’Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.3 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.

In 1938, O’Brien, who was a star quarterback for TCU, became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955. For more information, visit www.DaveyOBrienAward.com.
