Penix Becomes First to Win Two National QB of the Week Honors in 2023

FORT WORTH, Texas (Oct. 17, 2023) – Washington senior Michael Penix Jr. has been selected as the Week 7 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week, becoming the first player to receive the accolade twice this season. Penix, who was previously honored in week three, gives the Pac-12 Conference its fourth weekly winner of 2023.

Penix lifted the Huskies (6-0) to a thrilling 36-33 victory over then-No. 8 Oregon after throwing a game-winning 18-yard touchdown strike with 1:38 left to play. On the afternoon, Penix passed for 302 yards and four scores (22-for-37) against the previously unbeaten Ducks. It was the sixth time in as many games this season that Penix has thrown for more than 300 yards and marked the fourth time he has thrown at least four touchdown passes.

A native of Tampa, Fla., Penix ranks second in the NCAA in passing yards (2,301), total offense (384.2) and total quarterback rating (91.7), third in passing efficiency (189.9), fourth in touchdown passes (20), fifth in points responsible for (122) and 11th in completion percentage (.721).

The Davey O’Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981. Over its time, the Davey O’Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.3 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.

In 1938, O’Brien, who was a star quarterback for TCU, became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955. For more information, visit www.DaveyOBrienAward.com.
