Texas A&M’s Reed Named Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week

FORT WORTH, Texas (Oct. 29, 2024) – Texas A&M redshirt freshman Marcel Reed has been named the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week for Week 9 of the college football season for his performance in the Aggies’ 38-23 comeback win over No. 8 LSU on Saturday.

Reed entered the game midway through the third quarter with the Aggies trailing 17-7, and proceeded to lead Texas A&M to points on five consecutive possessions, including touchdowns on each of the first four, turning a 10-point deficit into a 15-point win.

In all, the native of Nashville, Tenn., carried the ball nine times for 62 yards (6.9 yards per carry) and three touchdowns, including one on his first snap. Through the air, he completed both of his pass attempts for 70 yards (35.0 yards per attempt) to finish the contest with a 99.8 quarterback rating. Reed was also named the SEC Freshman of the Week for his play.

The Davey O’Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981. Over its time, the Davey O’Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.3 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.

In 1938, O’Brien, who was a star quarterback for TCU, became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955. For more information, visit www.DaveyOBrienAward.com.
