Vanderbilt’s Pavia Grabs National Quarterback of the Week Accolade

FORT WORTH, Texas (Oct. 8, 2024) – For the first time in history, a Vanderbilt quarterback has been named the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week. Senior Diego Pavia earned the award after leading the Commodores to a 40-35 upset victory over No. 1 Alabama on Saturday.

In the program’s first-ever win over a top-5 school, Pavia connected on 16 of 20 passes (80.0 percent) for 252 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed 20 times for 56 yards, as he accounted for 308 total yards in the wire-to-wire win.

Additionally, the victory was the first for the Commodores over Alabama since 1984. Pavia finished with a total quarterback rating of 95.9 and a pass efficiency rating of 218.8. For his efforts, the native of Albuquerque, N.M., was also named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week.

The Davey O’Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981. Over its time, the Davey O’Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.3 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.

In 1938, O’Brien, who was a star quarterback for TCU, became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955. For more information, visit www.DaveyOBrienAward.com.
