Washington’s Penix Named National Quarterback of the Week

FORT WORTH, Texas (Sept. 19, 2023) — Washington senior Michael Penix Jr. has been named the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week for week three of the college football season.

Penix completed 27 of 35 attempts (77.1 percent) for 473 passing yards, the third-highest total in school history, as Washington earned a 41-7 road win over Michigan State. The Huskies jumped out to a commanding 35-0 halftime lead as the senior from Tampa, Fla., threw for 375 yards and all four of his touchdowns, matching the school record for touchdown passes in a half. Penix played just 2 1/2 quarters in the blowout victory.

Penix also earned Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week, Maxwell Award National Player of the Week and Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors for his play.

This season, Penix ranks first nationally in total passing yards (1,332) and total offense per game (447.0). He is second in passing touchdowns (12), fifth in completions per game (28.0) and ninth in completion percentage (74.3).

The Davey O’Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981. Over its time, the Davey O’Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.3 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.

In 1938, O’Brien, who was a star quarterback for TCU, became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955. For more information, visit www.DaveyOBrienAward.com.
