MIAMI’S WARD CLAIMS 2024 DAVEY O’BRIEN NATIONAL QUARTERBACK AWARD

FORT WORTH, Texas (Dec. 12, 2024) – Miami senior Cam Ward has been voted the 2024 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award winner, becoming the third Hurricane to hoist the nation’s oldest and most prestigious quarterback trophy. He joins Vinny Testaverde (1986) and Gino Torretta (1992) as winners from Miami.

On the year, Ward has completed 293 of 435 pass attempts for 4,123 yards and 36 touchdowns versus seven interceptions. He also has 196 rushing yards with four touchdowns while steering the Hurricanes to a 10-2 mark thanks to an offense that ranks first among all FBS programs in scoring offense (44.2) and total offense (538.3).

Heading into the bowl season, Ward leads the NCAA in passing touchdowns (36) and quarterback rating (88.0), while ranking second in passing yards (4,123), points responsible for (254) and total offense (359.9), and fourth in passing efficiency (171.1) and yards per pass attempt (9.5).

Ward has passed for over 300 yards 10 times this season, eclipsing 400 yards in three of those contests. He accounted for at least three touchdowns in nine of 12 games and had a trio of five-touchdown performances.

He earned Atlantic Coast Conference Football Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year accolades, in addition to being named the first-team ACC quarterback. Ward is currently a finalist for the Heisman Trophy and Walter Camp Player of the Year Award.

Ward tied for the national lead in Davey O’Brien Great 8 selections during the year, racking up five weekly honors. He was the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week in Week 1.

A native of West Columbia, Texas, Ward is the 10th Texan to win the Davey O’Brien Award, following Michael Bishop, Ty Detmer, Robert Griffin III, Johnny Manziel, Baker Mayfield, Colt McCoy, Kyler Murray, Andre Ware and Vince Young.

Fellow seniors Dillon Gabriel of Oregon and Shedeur Sanders of Colorado were award finalists alongside Ward. National Selection Committee voting took place following the final week of the regular season.

The committee’s members (media, college football experts and former winners) ranked each player (1st, 2nd, 3rd) on their ballots. Additionally, bonus ballots from the Davey O’Brien Fan Vote were added based on social media fan votes recorded on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

The announcement was made live on the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN. Ward will be honored in person at the 48th Annual Davey O’Brien Awards Dinner at The Fort Worth Club in Fort Worth, Texas, on Monday, Feb. 17, 2025.
